how much is this gold coin with a picture of a panda eating?
its a gold coin with 100 and a chinese sign I guess. It also has a panda eating on one side and chinese building on the other. The year is 1991. On top of the panda .999 1oz Au (so its silver with a gold outside …weird)
How much is this worth? I thought this was literally worthless and almost threw it away
w0w 2k ….geez……okay…but let me go ahead and say this. The coin is not as shiny as in the picture. it has some wear and tear. and a very small cut on the rim ( i say 1/4 of a mm). I also weighed it and it weighs 22g and that does not equal 1oz. So any further comments plz?
The 100 Yuan 1991 Panda is a one Troy ounce .999 gold coin from China. It is available as a proof collector’s coin and as a bullion coin, which is much less shiny, even when never touched.
Only 3,500 proofs were made, which is less than 10% of the number of bullion coins made, 36.367, itself a smaller mintage in the series. But the proof doesn’t sell for 10 times the value of a bullion coin, nowhere close, so scarcity alone doesn’t equal high value.
The bullion coin in high-grade does probably sell for close to $2,000, which is roughly a 50% markup on top of the bullion content, around $1,340 today. (The proofs are being advertised in the area of $2,800, about double the value of the gold, and not finding buyers at that level). But with the type of wear you describe, you will probably see only a 10%-15% premium from a collector that really wants it, and a dealer would pay you no premium at all, in fact, would try to get it for under that $1,340 figure.
The weight should not be 22 grams, though. It should be exactly 31.1 grams on an accurate metric scale. Try to find an accurate scale, and if it’s still weighing 22 grams, you have a fake coin that’s maybe been plated with gold.
