I need help with an insurance coverage question?
Last year Charles and Kathy Price bought a home with a dwelling replacement value of $290,000 and insured it (via an HO-3 policy) for $238,000. The policy reimburses for actual cash value and has a $500 deductible, standard limits for coverage C items, and no scheduled property. Recently, burglars broke into the house and stole a 2-year-old television set with a current replacement value of $1,300 and an estimated useful life of 7 years. They also took jewelry valued at $2,300 and silver flatware valued at $3,700.
Assuming a 50% coverage C limit, how much will the Prices receive if they filed a claim for the stolen items?

Right. This is clearly a practice exam question.
First step . . .look at penalties.
You don’t have to worry about coinsurance, because you’re only looking at contents, not dwelling.
You don’t have to worry about the replacement cost, because they don’t have replacement cost on the contents.
You DO have several items – jewelry and silver – that have built in limitations to theft. Now, the standard limitation can vary by state, but you’d need to double check what that limitation is. The standard amount is $1,000 on jewelry, and $2500 on silver.
First math step, is to calculate the depreciated value of the television set. That’s going to be 5/7 of $1300. Take that number, and add it to your special limits on jewelry and silver. That’s your total insured loss.
Now, I’m not positive about this, so you’d need to check with a property adjuster in your state . . . but I believe the deductible for the policy, could be applied to the excess (uncovered) amounts of jewelry and silver, meaning that the total loss payable, would be $4428.57 (5/7 of the television, plus $3500).
