Is this 2 coin set God & Country by the Franklin Mint sterling silver?
I have a 2 coin set made by The Franklin Mint. I bought it at a garage sale. I have no idea how old it is and I have no idea if it is pure silver, sterling silver, or some other type of metal. It’s in a piece of cardboard and says “God & Country” at the bottom. Does anyone know anything about this set? I’m hoping I didn’t get ripped off. Thanks!
Franklin Mint produced these medals (not coins) for a Shell Oil Co. promotion, between 1968-1972. To be certain about what you have, the medals need to be measured. If they measure 39 mm across, they are sterling silver. If they measure 32 mm across, they are nickel silver, which, oddly enough, contains absolutely no silver at all. Sterling silver versions of the 32 mm size were made for the Pledge medal only, however, it was not paired with the nickel silver Lord’s Prayer medal.
The Franklin Mint Guide I have does not give a silver weight for the sterling medals, as it does for many. Most 39 mm pieces weigh between 1/2 and 3/4 Troy ounce of pure silver, so if you have the 39 mm, you have a minimum of an ounce of silver, and you’re fine if you paid $30 or less.
If you have the 32 nickel silver, you overpaid if you spent more than $5, but you didn’t get ripped off. Unless the seller falsely claimed they were silver. Either way, never buy something without researching it first.
